Selfish Beauty

When it comes to Beauty, it's okay to be Selfish!

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO GET WAXED?

Typically you will need to get waxed every 3 to 5 weeks...go any sooner and you will remove some of the hairs but not all of them which will throw off your waxing schedule and will not give you clean wax results. Having said this it is also important to note that each individuals hair growth varies so the time frame between waxing should be determined by your own hair growth.  The ideal hair length is approximately 1/4" this will usually provide enough length to allow the wax to adhere better and thus provide a better end result.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I GO FOR MY WAX APPOINTMENT?

Depending on what service you are having the Technician may ask you to remove your clothes/underwear in order for her to be able to perform the service without getting wax on your clothes.  If you have any questions, this is a good time to ask. She will prep your skin and apply wax to the area, reapply were needed, she will discard all wax used on you and proceed to apply a moisturizer to the area waxed which will absorb into your skin immediately and this will conclude your service.

I'M READY! WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

It’s best to wait at least 2 weeks from your last shave/wax before coming in. Your hair must be at least ¼” long for the wax to adhere properly. Do not bother trimming: the longer the hair, the better your results will be! Exfoliating the area to be waxed prior to your appointment is highly recommended. Stay away from lotions or heavily fragranced oils.

WILL IT BE PAINFUL?

Well this depends on each individual, what may seem painful for one may not seem painless for the other.  We need to remember that we are pulling hair from it's roots most likely it will cause some discomfort.

CAN I GET WAXED IF I'M PREGNANT?

Yes. Unless otherwise advised by your doctor it should not be a problem, however we do recommend that if you are in the last trimester of your pregnancy you limit your waxing to certain areas.

AFTER CARE

Your skin may be slightly sensitive directly following your wax. The irritation most people experience will diminish after just a few hours. You should avoid sun exposure for 48 hours prior to and after waxing. Also avoid creams and lotions, as well as activities like working out, swimming, etc. To prevent ingrown hairs, gently exfoliate at least twice per week. The most important rule of all is to NOT shave or trim between your waxing appointments!

WAXING CONTRAINDICATIONS LIST

It is important that your esthetician know any medications that you are taking and/or any skin products that you are using. This can ensure a safe and successful waxing experience.

If you are taking or have taken any of these medications within the past three months, please call the office before scheduling an appointment:

  • Accutane (Acne medication)
  • Adapalene (Acne medication)
  • Alustra (Retin A)
  • Antibiotics
  • Avage (Tazorac – Acne medication)
  • Avita (type of Retin A)
  • Clindamycin
  • Differin (Acne medication)
  • Doxycycline
  • Erythromycin
  • Isotretinoin (like Accutane)
  • Madifloxicine
  • Metronidazole
  • Minocycline
  • Renova (Retin A)
  • Tazarac (Acne medication)
  • Tazarotene (like Tazorac)
  • Tetracycline
  • Tretinoin (like Retin A)

These medications may cause the skin to thin or to be extra sensitive to waxing. Thin, sensitive skin can lift with the wax. If you have taken Accutane within the last year it is not advised to wax for one year after you have stopped taking this medication.

If you are currently using any of the following products, they can cause the skin to be overly sensitive. Please inform us prior to your appointment.

  • Other Acne medications not listed above
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic)
  • Topical Antibiotics
  • Retinol
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Exfoliants/Laser Peels/Microdermabrasion

If you are taking a medication or using a product that has changed your skin in any way, and you are unsure about the safety of waxing, please talk to your doctor first. Hopefully we can work together to make your waxing experience a great one!
